Initiative Erdgasspeicher e.V. (INES)

In Germany, natural gas storage facilities make a key contribution to security of supplies. They are filled in low-consumption months and meet growing gas demand in the winter. In addition, they will become increasingly important in the future for the storage of hydrogen and methane produced using renewables. In view of these prospects, a number of storage facility operators joined forces to form an association, “Initiative Erdgasspeicher e.V.", or INES, with headquarters in Berlin.

The objective of the initiative is especially to enhance public awareness of the importance of natural gas storage facilities in connection with the energy transition. In addition, INES is committed to promoting safe, efficient and economical supplies of natural gas.

Storage facilities operated by members of INES account for more than 90 percent of natural gas storage capacity in Germany.
